Design and Development of Aircraft Systems Design and Development of Aircraft Systems Engineering, General Author's Preface; Our previous books on Aircraft Systems and Civil Avionics Systems have been aimed at providing technical descriptions of the various systems of aircraft with examples from practical applications. We are currently preparing a manuscript for a similar book on military avionics, which will be written in the same style. In these books, we have made only passing references to the process by which such systems are designed and developed. We realize that this is an omission on our part, since a great deal of effort goes into the realization of an aircraft from receipt of the original customer's requirement, through the design and development of the product, to successful operation in service. We have tried to rectify that omission in this book and concentrated here on the product life cycle, the design and development process, and the skills required to develop a product as complex as an aircraft. We hope that the book is equally useful to developers of similarly complex products. Design and Development of Aircraft Systems has been written to be generic and not to describe any one single process. Most organizations have developed their own specific process over a period of time, and it will work for them, their product, and their customers. The life cycle of products varies considerably, and this influences the implementation of the process. The whole aircraft life cycle currently extends to more than 30 years, and the development part of the life cycle may itself exceed ten years. This poses its own challenges in adhering to a single specific process for that length of time. We hope that this book will complement our other volumes, and will inform readers of the work that is carried out by engineers in the aerospace industry to produce innovative and challenging - yet safe and reliable - systems and aircraft.
